Island Bound: Casey Dexter-Lee

Island Bound: Women Making History gathers, preserves and shares the stories of inspiring women whose collective action helped to carry Angel Island history forward into the future.

Casey Dexter-Lee is a State Park Interpreter at Angel Island State Park, where she has lived and worked for 25 years, a familiar and welcoming presence. For her longtime work and contributions, she was awarded the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation’s Spirit of Angel Island award in 2020.

“For me, coming here to Angel Island really helped me understand that history is the story of people. Prior to working here, history had always been something far away, something done, and when I had that realization in my 20s, it becomes a lot more interesting, because you can relate to experiences that people have had. That is what I hope to do in our work here. If you hear a compelling story of a person, that’s something you might carry with you, forever.”
