Explore the Language of Storytelling with Del Sol Quartet
The Del Sol Performing Arts Organization’s Angel Island Insight highlights the importance of community storytelling in shaping public perception through three programs examining Angel Island’s history: an exploration into the musicality of the disappearing Hoisan-wa dialect by The Last Hoisan Poets and The Del Sol Quartet; a mini-course of Angel Island’s poetic history at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Francisco State University; and a community online art exhibit “Angel Island: In Sight 2021.” These programs extended public engagement with the world premiere of composer Huang Ruo’s Angel Island 天使島: Oratorio for Voices & String Quartet in October 2021.
Angel Island Insight with Del Sol Quartet & The Last Hoisan Poets
The Last Hoisan Poets — Chinese American poets Genny Lim, Nellie Wong, and Flo Oy Wong — trace their ancestral roots to villages in the Pearl River Delta of China. The poets pay homage to their mother language which is at risk of fading from collective memory.
Angel Island Insights Mini-Course with OLLI @ SF State
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) mini-course explored Angel Island history through stories, poetry, and music. A class held on the historic grounds of the Presidio brought to life a compelling tale of community resolve and collective advocacy.
Angel Island In Sight 2021: Community Art Exhibition
This visual storytelling project focuses on Angel Island itself with a community photography exhibit, enabling a diverse group of participants to work together to create a collaborative portrait of Angel Island drawn from a multitude of views – near and far, past and present.
